Estimating FTP from Strava

How WattAscent estimates your FTP from Strava rides, and what it needs.

If you choose Estimate it from Strava when setting up your profile, WattAscent looks at your rides with power from the last 60 days and finds your best efforts at different durations.

It combines two standard estimates with a simple average: a critical power fit across your best efforts, and 95% of your best 20 minutes. The estimate is never lower than your best 60-minute power.

What it needs: rides with a power meter (or a smart trainer recording power) that include at least one hard effort of 12 minutes or longer. Without that, WattAscent can't estimate reliably, and it will suggest the Ramp Test instead.

Outdoor efforts often aren't all-out, so a test usually gives a more accurate number.
